ELD, GPS & Device Specifications FAQs
1. Are Top Tracking ELD devices registered on the official FMCSA list?
Yes. Both the Mini Logbook and Logbook Pro are fully self-certified and active on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) registered ELD registry in strict compliance with 49 CFR Part 395.
2. What is the difference between the Mini Logbook and Logbook Pro?
The Mini Logbook is an ultra-compact, plug-and-play Bluetooth device designed for owner-operators and small fleets who pair it with their own smartphones or tablets. The Logbook Pro is an enterprise hardwired dual-bus unit (J1939/J1708) with onboard flash memory that continuously logs driving records even if mobile devices disconnect or cellular signals drop.
3. Do I need an adapter cable to install the ELD or GPS tracker in my truck?
It depends on your truck's diagnostic port. Heavy-duty Class 7 and 8 trucks (2007 to present) use our J1939 9-Pin Deutsch adapter. Older commercial diesel trucks (1996–2006) use our J1708 6-Pin Round adapter. Light-to-medium duty trucks (Ford F-Series, Chevy Silverado, Ram) plug directly into the standard 16-Pin OBD-II port without adapters.
4. How do the devices record Hours of Service (HOS) in areas with no cellular signal?
All Top Tracking ELD units connect directly to the vehicle ECM and record engine hours, vehicle motion, speed, and odometer readings into non-volatile internal memory. As soon as the truck re-enters cellular range or reconnects to the driver's device, all stored records automatically sync to the fleet cloud without any data loss or HOS violation risks.
5. Can drivers use their own smartphones/tablets, or is the ZTE K87 tablet required?
You have complete flexibility. Drivers can use their own devices (BYOD) by downloading our official app on the Google Play Store Top Tracking HOS or Apple App Store. Alternatively, motor carriers who want a dedicated commercial in-cab screen can choose our ZTE K87 8-inch tablet, which arrives 100% pre-configured with the app pre-installed, locked in kiosk mode for safety, and bundled with an active 4G LTE data plan.
6. Can the Fleet 4G GPS Tracker connect with auxiliary sensors like fuel or temperature probes?
Yes. The hardwired Fleet 4G GPS Tracker features dedicated digital and analog I/O lines designed specifically to interface with ultrasonic/capacitive fuel level sensors, reefer cargo temperature sensors, PTO (Power Take-Off) triggers, and dual-facing dash cameras.
